"unite the particley Quantum stuff with the smooth wavey Relativity stuff; the current state of play is that they’re both right but mutually incompatible. Thoughts of unity often seem to end up looking at the role of the observer, a thing which the reductionist mind has trouble focusing on."

Sounds like squaring the circle to me...

This actually reminds me of something I read in a book once, by a chap called Carver Mead, who (coincidentally??) was one of the inventors of the microprocessor. Something like:

'Everything in quantum mechanics is waves. Particles are an illusion created by the existence of boundary conditions'

i.e., the beginnings and ends and interactions of things make the world look granular.

I'm not sure this is received scientific wisdom, but it's sure interesting. Another massive puzzle in science is to unite the particley Quantum stuff with the smooth wavey Relativity stuff; the current state of play is that they're both right but mutually incompatible. Thoughts of unity often seem to end up looking at the role of the observer, a thing which the reductionist mind has trouble focusing on.
