- Ven. Kobutsu Malone on The Guide to Higher Consciousness -
Higher than what? What is the nature of that that this is higher than? And what we learn here is the answer to that question. What it is that is the groundwork. Before we can get higher, we need to know what is. Higher than what? Higher consciousness. What is our consciousness that we are getting higher than? First we need to know that. Then we can worry about getting higher.

Wheres his dog? Maybe “higher” is a bad analogy? Maybe “more inclusive?”

Not too many pictures with both him and the dog, unfortunately.
In the part of the talk I took this from, he’s reacting to a New Age bookstore’s idea of “higher consciousness”, so I think he’s pointing out the same thing you are, as far as “higher” vs “inclusive”. Actually, you might like that talk/essay. Of course, he’s coming at things from within a Zen Buddhist perspective, while you’re not, but his no-bullshit attitude kind of reminded me of you, in a way. For what its worth.

Funny you say that. He just sent me some more pictures of him and Harley (the dog) after reading this blog post. He’s definitely a good guy. He does a lot of work in prisons, check out some of his other writings if you have a chance.
I particularly liked this article, about his visit to Death Row with a prominent Japanese Zen master, which it seems he has expanded upon on his site.
I’ll be posting the new pics soon, since Harley seems to be so popular around here. :)
