Man, that’s cool.

It blew my mind when I heard him say that. It goes against “common sense” but it’s so obviously true once you realize what’s he’s said. Damn. So that’s how my brain works, thanks Marshall! :)
Though maybe I would say “induces pattern recognition” rather than “produces”. That’s basically what the internet does, almost as if it were designed for it.

Cool interview. I always liked Mailer, but he seemed quite a bit of his depth in that bout between intellectual heavyweights.

Yeah, McLuhan’s got a wider perspective on the field than Mailer does. Those to his credit, Mailer seems to accept this, and seems to be more presenting arguments to McLuhan in an attempt to make it more clear.
Though I think if he ever thought it was clear, and he disagreed, he’d do so pretty strongly! :)

The trick is to recognise good patterns. I find the Intermesh most unhelpful in this respect.

No kidding. But it is an easy way to take on the information overload in the hopes of developing pattern recognition skills. Its been doing wonders for me, anyway. :)

I suppose this is how the word ‘surfing’ has stuck.
